Spring Commissioning

Preparing Your Sailboat or Cruiser for the Season

As the weather warms and the days grow longer, boaters across Canada are eager to get back on the water. Whether you own a sailboat or a cruiser, proper spring commissioning ensures your vessel is safe, seaworthy, and ready for the adventures ahead. Taking the time to inspect, maintain, and prepare your boat now can prevent unexpected issues and costly repairs later in the season.

Spring Boat Commissioning Checklist

  1. Schedule Your Launch
  • Spring is a busy time for marinas and yacht clubs, so be sure to book your launch early. Many facilities have limited availability, and a delay in scheduling could cut into your time on the water.
  1. Inspect the Hull and Deck
  • Check the hull for cracks, blisters, or other damage that may have occurred over the winter.
  • Clean and wax the hull to protect against UV rays and marine growth.
  • Inspect and lubricate seacocks to ensure they open and close properly.
  • Check deck fittings, hatches, and ports for leaks.
  1. Check the Engine and Fuel System
  • Change the engine oil and replace oil filters.
  • Inspect fuel lines for cracks, leaks, or loose connections.
  • Replace fuel filters and drain any water from fuel separators.
  • Test the battery, clean the terminals, and fully charge it before launching.
  1. Rigging and Sails (For Sailboats)
  • Inspect standing and running rigging for wear, corrosion, or broken strands.
  • Check turnbuckles, cotter pins, and shackles for security.
  • Inspect sails for rips, loose stitching, or UV damage, and repair as needed.
  1. Safety Equipment Check
  • Ensure all life jackets are in good condition and meet Transport Canada regulations.
  • Check fire extinguishers, flares, and other emergency equipment—replace expired items.
  • Test bilge pumps and float switches to confirm proper operation.
  • Verify that navigation lights, the horn, and your VHF radio are working.
  1. Plumbing and Electrical Systems
  • Inspect hoses, connections, and seacocks for leaks.
  • Flush and refill the freshwater system.
  • Test all electrical systems, including interior and exterior lighting, pumps, and electronics.
  1. Docking and Mooring Equipment
  • Inspect dock lines and fenders for wear and replace if needed.
  • Check your anchor, rode, and chain for corrosion or weak links.

Review Your Boat Insurance Before You Launch

Before you put your boat in the water, take a moment to review your marine insurance policy. Have you made any upgrades or modifications over the winter? Are you planning longer trips this season that may require extended cruising coverage?

It’s also important to share your policy details with your marina or yacht club, as many require proof of insurance for docking and launching privileges.

At Gallagher Skippers’ Plan, we specialize in marine insurance and can help ensure you have the right coverage for the season ahead. Call us at 1.800.661.7211 to review your policy or visit www.skippersplan.com/quote to get a quote. A little preparation now will ensure smooth sailing all summer long!
